Held over three intensive days from Monday to Wednesday, 4–6 May 2026, at Hotel Santika Premier Slipi in Jakarta, the activity was attended by 30 teachers representing various public high schools across Jakarta Province, including SMAN 8 Jakarta, SMAN 68 Jakarta, SMAN 112 Jakarta, and several other schools.

Throughout the program, participants were required to attend all sessions and stay overnight at the venue to ensure effective learning outcomes and to strengthen professional networks among educators.

The training was officially opened on Monday (4/5) with remarks from PIER Director Djayadi Hanan and Cynthia Tri Putri, Representative of KAS Germany for Indonesia and Timor-Leste. Also present was Juwarto, Head of the Educator Section within the Educator and Education Personnel Development Division at the Jakarta Provincial Education Office, who spoke on behalf of the agency.

In his address, Juwarto expressed appreciation for PIER Universitas Paramadina’s initiative in strengthening democratic education within school environments. He emphasized that humanities teachers hold a strategic role in shaping character and human values amid the overwhelming flow of digital information.

“Through gadgets, all knowledge is already in the hands of students, but whether they remain fully developed human beings rests entirely in the hands of teachers,” Juwarto stated.

He added, “Humanities teachers bear the responsibility of ensuring students understand the purpose and meaning of life.”

The training featured a lineup of experts and education practitioners as keynote speakers, including Djayadi Hanan, Ph.D., Dr. Mohammad Abduhzen, M.Hum., Umar Abdullah, Ph.D., M. Hilal Tri Anwari, Achmad Firas Khudi, SE., ME., MA., and Danang Binuko, SE, M.AP from the Ministry of Home Affairs.

During the sessions, participants deepened their understanding of Pancasila Democracy and democratic paradigms, covering core principles such as freedom, equality, and respect for diversity. Teachers also explored fundamental democratic values including popular sovereignty, deliberation and consensus, rule of law, and control mechanisms within the framework of national life and governance.

Beyond theoretical reinforcement, participants engaged in discussions on various case studies regarding the practice of democracy both in society and within their respective schools. The program also addressed Global Issues in Democracy, providing teachers with a broader perspective on democratic challenges at both national and international levels.

On the pedagogical side, teachers were equipped with participatory learning methods emphasizing andragogical and pedagogical approaches, group dynamics management, and structured experience-based learning. These strategies are intended to foster a more dialogic, critical, and participatory learning environment in the classroom.

On the final day, participants were guided to develop strategies for integrating democratic values into the subjects they teach. They also received training on utilizing the internet as a learning resource and media, before concluding the program by drafting Action Plans to be implemented in their respective schools as a follow-up to the training outcomes.

This “Teacher Training for Democratic Education” program reflects the ongoing commitment of PIER Universitas Paramadina and KAS Germany to strengthen democratic education in Indonesia by enhancing the capacity of teachers as key agents in shaping character, national values, and a democratic culture within the education sector.
